Vishvalanka Higher Education and Cultural Foundation was started back in 1959 by Dr.Tharsi Warunakulasoorya for the sole purpose of teaching the heavenly art of music to children of Sri Lanka. It's been a great success and has generated thousand of professionals in the field of music since. 21st of June 2008 is a special day for the small community as it is spreading it's arms for the first time in the United Kingdom by Mr.Narendra Warunakulasoorya who is the elder son of Dr.Tharsi Warunakulasoorya.

He studied music at the age of 17. He learnt using his own initiative, in the absence of his teacher K. Layanal Perera by using his notes only. The first instrument he learnt was the violin which was made for him by one of his relatives.
At the age of 18 in 1951, he approached the great musician Mr. Edwin Samaradiwakara to study violin, tabla, sitar and vocal during the weekends. Mr. Edwin Samaradiwakara encouraged Prof Tharsi at the age of 24 to go to India to learn music at the RavindraNath Tagore University of Santaniketan, Calcutta where he studied violin, tabla, sitar, vocal (singing), israj, flute, Ravindranath Sangeeth at degree level for 10 years. He returned to Sri Lanka, keeping his connections with RavindraNath Tagore University and Bhathkande Sangeeth University, Lucknow. In 1960, he established Vishva Lanka College of Sri Lanka, became a Music Inspector in Sri Lanka Ministry of Education, a Deputy Director of music and soon after became a Director of aesthetic fine arts. At the college, some of his students became teachers, some music directors and some university lecturers.
Prof. Tharsi passed his knowledge and musical skills to his 5 children who have all become Vishards, each with 2 degrees. He continues his passion in Aesthetic Fine Arts. |

Visharad Narendra Nath Warunakulasoorya, joined this institution in Sri Lanka in his childhood. He started his music career with studying vocal, followed by instrumentals including the tabla, violin, israj, flute and harmonium. His favourite instrument is the sitar which is also his fathers favourite. He studied music at the Vishva Lanka music college. He also studied Kandian dance during school in which he passed O-level stage from grade 6-11.
His achievements also include an unbeatable record at the national school event. Consecutively over 5 years at the National School event of dance and music, Narendra Nath performed sitar pieces and vocal items in which he gained 1st place. He has also studied Kathak dancing.
In his youth years he gained 2 Sri Lankan Presidential competition awards On passing all his examination in music – instrumental and vocal, he has been awarded 3 degrees from 3 countries namely Sri Lanka, India and UK. He started his music career in Sri Lanka as a government graduate music teacher, followed by a music inspector, then the deputy director of Vishva Lanka College in Sri Lanka. |

Director of Vishva Lanka College, Sri Lanka From childhood, he studied at Vishva Lanka College. At school, he studied art and has achieved many national and international certificates for 1st place in art competitions. He gained a degree in Hindustani classical music (vocal) sitar and violin at Bhathkande Sangeet Vidyapith University, Lucknow in India and has a National Institute of Education Sri Lanka National Diploma in Teaching.
